If you have ever been to a Doctor for
treatment of an aliment you may have been given a prescription. The
prescription may have been for a pill or a ointment or a lens to correct
your vision. You may have been diagnosed with a short term illness or
with something that would mean you would need the prescribed item for a
long period of time. You understood that taking the prescription as
instructed was your part in the process of improving your health or
well-being. You took that written instruction and had it ‘filled’
intending to do as you were directed by the Doctor - expecting to see
results. The written prescription not only indicated what was needed,
but also the amount and the times it should be repeated. The label may
have said "take 3 times a day".
Let’s take a look at how God may prescribe something for us. Isaiah says the Lord sent him (chapter 61)
We see here that God says He will give us praise for heaviness (depression, loneliness, emptiness...). What do you see happening here? Whoosh! A touch and instantly God has ‘made a trade’ with you - He takes your heaviness and immediately you are filled with praise. Hmm Not impossible - for with God ALL things are possible. Or do we say a few sentences glorifying God and sing some praise songs - see no change - and assume "God’s Word doesn’t work for me". Why? He has given us a ‘prescription’. Our part is to take that ‘written instruction’ - read it, understand it, take it to be filled if necessary, and then use it! In this case we could take that ‘prescription’ to the nearest Christian Book Store. We could buy one or two or three - or whatever number of praise tapes we need. Take those tapes or CD’s home and play them - play them 3 times a day, 4 times a day..... over and over enjoying the fellowship with the Father. We would not take the Doctor’s prescription home - try one dose and then give up if we see no change. We continue! We are willing even to take something that tastes bad or makes us uncomfortable just to arrive at the end result. Why do we give up on God’s prescriptions so quickly? Does taking the ‘prescription’ in a continued and unchanging manner make the miracle working power of God less and our actions more? Oh no! On the contrary, each time we obey His instruction we draw nearer to Him. The desire within our hearts to follow His direction and to take part with Him in our growing process pleases Him. We take one step - He does all the rest! Each time we meet with Him in praise and worship we grow, we change, we experience His presence. Would you trade a momentary touch for a daily communion with Him? As we learn more of Him - as we draw nearer and understand His ways - as our trust and faith take over and fear and doubt disappear - we will see more and more of the immediate changes take place - simply because we will know His desire for us. His desire for us is in His Word. Take a look at these "prescriptions" - how do you think we can have these "filled"? Here we are instructed to ‘renew our minds’. We can change our thinking by changing what we think about. The TV and Movies of today can so greatly influence us to negative and corrupt thoughts. We can choose - the Bible is our first defense - reading and studying the Word, placing scripture in our thoughts on purpose. Again, we can go to the Christian Book Store where we can find many different choices - Bible Study, Fiction, Biographies... teaching tapes, videos and so much more. Find something that will point your thoughts to God and His Word.
There are many, many more ‘prescriptions’ in the Word. Look for them. Have them ‘filled’ and put the instruction into practice. Just as though you were in physical therapy - get into ‘spiritual therapy’! Exercise your spirit! I hope this has given you something to think about and maybe a new way to look at Father’s instructions. I pray that all of us will read His Word and see and understand and desire with all our hearts to obey what He has directed us to do. |
